Job Description: My client is a multi-media giant backed by Sony and leading the way with Audio / Video products that help power industry leaders like Apple itunes, Sony Sonic Stage and Winamp.

They are seeking a full-time Senior Software Manager to join its Database Engineering Team working on the development and enhancement of several terabyte-sized Oracle databases that serve as the foundation persistent data stores for their leading products.

In this position, the Senior Software Manager functions as both a manager and key individual contributor. As a manager, the successful candidate will oversee a team of software engineers towards the development and operations of server-side database-oriented software, including new feature and infrastructure development, customer-oriented projects, and 24/7/365 production applications. As a key individual contributor, the successful candidate will own portions of source code, but more importantly, will serve as technical lead for a variety of projects, requiring a deep understanding of database programs, processes, and outputs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Senior Manager’s primary responsibility is to lead and manage a team of 3-8 software engineers to ensure the successful development, operations, and serviceability of critical server-side database applications, many of which operate in a 24/7/365 fashion. The work break-down is roughly 70% management and 30% development, though this can change significantly based on project needs, often on a daily basis.

Within the leadership and management role, Sr. Manager has responsibility for:

• day-to-day functional overview and direction of a software engineering team
• providing operational reporting/tracking indicators
• working closely with Professional Services to solve customer-oriented short-term projects
• working closely with Product Management to define and build new products and services
• developing individuals and team goals and following-through
• performing individual reviews
• forecasting resource needs

As a key individual contributor, the Sr. Software Manager is responsible for:

• long-term maintenance of complex database systems and processes
• design and development of flexible and scalable database applications and systems
• leveraging work across more than one product

REQUIREMENTS

Professional/Managerial
• B.S. Computer Science, B.S. Electrical Engineering, B.S. Management Information Systems, or equivalent
• 4+ years managing a team of three or more software engineers
• Execution-oriented outlook and approach
• Positive and constructive, customer-oriented attitude
• Grows and challenges team; defines individual and team goals and follows-through
• Possesses excellent technical and business communication skills
• Responsive to change, responsive to requests
• Generates, enhances, and champions new ideas

Projects/Development
• Produced three or more complex commercial applications or technologies, preferably server-side database oriented applications
• 8+ years of technical software development leadership experience
• Excellent analysis, project planning and schedule estimating skills
• Accepts ownership of complex critical server-side production operations and processes
• Accepts ownership of significant portions of application code

Technology
• 8+ years developing database systems and processes, preferably using Oracle RDBMS
• Expert database design (logical/physical ER modeling, schema design, etc.)
• Expert Oracle, DB2, or SQLServer developer
• Expert SQL and performance tuning – minimum 6 years
• Expert with UNIX as a development and deployment platform – minimum 4 years
• Knowledge of one of the following programming languages:
o Java, C, C++, python, perl, ruby, php
• Solid Experience in some form of source code control software (perforce, cvs, etc.)
• Strong knowledge of Internet Technologies, such as http, html, php, ftp, etc.
